Peace Officer


Gold Shield Training Center offers a full spectrum of all state mandated training courses including the Basic Peace Officer Training Course and all related annual training courses. All basic course requirements, which include classroom instruction and initial training in firearms and other weapons, must be completed as a single and cohesive unit. Peace Officers are required to complete a minimum 99 Hour Basic Peace Officer Training Course. Mandatory subjects include Ethics and the Law Enforcement Profession, Laws of Arrest, Constitutional Law, Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, The Court Environment, Civil Law, Investigations by Peace Officers, Arrest and Custody Procedures, Report Writing, Crime Scene Investigations, Search and Seizure, Taking Possession of a Firearm, and Conflict Resolution. To work as a Peace Officer with Firearms you must also complete the Initial Firearms and Deadly Physical Force Course which is a 47 Hour Firearms Training Course for Peace Officers.


It is required by New York State law that all persons attending the Basic Peace Officer Training Course must be employed as a Peace Officer and also be listed on the employer’s peace officer registry. It is also required by New York State law that the Division of Justice Services receives a notice at least 45 days in advance of the start of the program. Gold Shield Training Center will submit this request along with the Curriculum Content Form once a training schedule has been established. Once the course is completed, the Class Roster / Notification of Completion will be completed and submit to New York State.


Prior to submitting the curriculum to the Division of Justice Services for approval, we recommend a conference with your organization to discuss additional electives you may want to include into the course. Additional electives may be:

  • OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration)

  • Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings and Domestic Bio-Terrorism

  • Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness

  • Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) & Bomb Threats Training

  • Evacuation Procedures

  • Sexual Harassment

  • Emergency Medical Training – First Aid, CPR & AED, Blood Borne Pathogens


We also offer security officer training courses such as the 8 Hour Pre-assignment Training Course and 16 Hour On-The-Job Training Course for Security Guards, the 47 Hour Firearms Training Course for Armed Security Guards and Armored Car Guards. In addition to security courses, we offer the Basic Pistol Safety Course and with full service assistance with obtaining a pistol permit in New York State and New York City.


99 Hour Peace Officer Course

The 99 Hour Peace Officer Course, consist of the following topics:
Penal Law which will cover an array of Penal Law Offenses, Criminal Procedure Law this explains the difference between the powers of police officers, peace officers and citizens.  Conflict Resolutions will explain how to combat crimes by implementing a plan and adjusting it as you go along to make the plan work.  Constitutional Law will explain how the Constitution works in Law Enforcement.  Report Writingwill teach the newly appointed peace officer how to write complete and accurate reports.  Court Environment 1 & 2 will explain how the court system works and how you as a peace officer should act, when having to appear and testify in court.  Laws of Arrest will introduce the peace officer to Laws of Arrest and the consequences for violating the Laws of Arrest.  Arrest Procedures will show the peace officer how to process an arrest.  Crime Scene Investigation will explain the process of Crime Scene Investigations and what the first officer on the scene has to do, and his responsibilities.  Eyewitness Investigations explains the different ways eyewitness investigation can be done. Search and Seizure will explain the proper way to conduct a search and take possession of property and the consequences for violating the rules for search and seizure.  Taking Possession of a Firearm will explain the proper technique of taking possession of a firearm, explaining the different parts of a firearm.


Additional topics covered in the 99 hour Peace officer course include First Aid/ CPR certification, Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness, Prevention and Response to Suicide Bombings, Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings and Domestic Bio-Terrorism, if successfully completed each course is certified by Homeland Security. Handcuffing and Searching certifications are also included in the 99 hours course. Additional course for the ASP expandable baton can also be included.
